Earlier And Earlier Every Year

Do you know that I have received three Halloween costume catalogs in the mail since Thursday? That's one catalog a day for the past three days. Isn't it only the beginning of August? I haven't even started back-to-school shopping yet!

Mr. Schmitty threw the mail on the counter and the kids saw one of the catalogs. W. scooped it right up and they started to browse the pages. Smiling away they all began to pick out their favorites.

"I want to be this Power Ranger!" yells W. He's been a Power Ranger three times already, can we move on to something else? Pleeeeaaaase?

"Okay, nevermind, I want to be Boba Fett from Star Wars!"

T. chimes in that he wants to be Jango Fett because he has to do everything his brother does.

Well, that would be fine and dandy, except for the fact that each costume is $59.99. Yes, I said EACH! And that is before shipping and handling, which we all know will be at least, what? A thousand dollars?

I also wouldn't mind so much about the steep price if they would actually wear the whole costume. W.'s school has a strict policy on masks. You can't wear one for security reasons. I guess they are afraid of midget terrorists or something. They want to be able to see everyone's face. They also can't have weapons, which I get, I mean I don't want my kid losing an eye during his classroom party. That would so put a damper on trick or treating.

"No, I'm sorry guys, but pick out something else, something without a mask."

They have now decided on Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Until next week, I'm sure. And the week after that. We have two and a half months people, they will be changing their minds over and over again before Halloween is actually near.

That in itself is another one of my complaints. I can't buy the costumes now because by October they will complain that, "I doooon't waaaannnnnaaaaa be that!" If I wait until they are sure of their choices the stores will all be telling me the costume is on back order until November 1st. What is a mom to do? And no, do not suggest I make their costumes, that's not happening unless my kids want to dress up as a ghost. That's about all this seamstress can handle. Please see the picture above. My kid would be the one receiving a rock in his goodie bag.

I've got one more gripe. I finally got my daughter, right? Halloween should be princesses, kitty kats, or fairies. Guess what R. wants to be? Yup, a PINK Power Ranger.

Good Grief!

You're doing good to 'only' be dealing with Halloween! I was in the mall yesterday and walked past a store with a big Christmas display right by the front door!!!

My almost 3 year old has a ton of princess dressing up outfits - I'll be starting my campaign soon that she should dress up as a princess for halloween - save a whole lot of hassle and not to mention money for me :)

I was at TJ Maxx yesterday and they had some Halloween candy out by the cash register!!!!! It's 100 degrees here in Nashville this weekend! Sheesh.

I have had excellent luck finding costumes on eBay believe it or not. But I do try to wait until the first of October because kids change their minds about 9 million times.

I am not very crafty and so far the most elaborate costume I have made is a "ghost" with an old white crib sheet and black felt! ;)

I hear you. I, too, have been deluged with Halloween costume catalogs (and frankly, it feels like they are trying to torture me because it is so frackin hot out there that I would LOVE it to be October...)

Last year, after her one-size-fits-most ladybug costume finally bit the dust, Liv wanted to be a witch. So, I consented to let her order this hugely ornate costume from a catalog. She had a major growth spurt in September, right after we ordered it, and by Halloween, she was bursting out of that outfit like a barmaid in a hoochy cooch bar.

This year, she wants to be Hermione Granger. I figure this should be easy. We will frizz out her hair a bit, spray it brown and put her in a small black graduation gown. She has the wand from last year.

And we might be set!

Y'all aren't in school yet? We started the 8th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah us!

Sorry, I was just so excited.

The outlawed trick-or-treating here, so unless I want to drive an hour we just do the school carnival. Last year we took old white t-shirts and drew a giant "P" with a sharpie on them. Then with the help of an eyeliner pencil gave ourselves "black eyes"-we went as-The Black Eyed Peas.

LOL! My daughter was Elvis one year...cracked me up!
I hate forking that money over for the costumes. Once they turn 10, though, I refuse to buy costumes...make them create something on their own.

My daughter (now 18) was a pink Power Ranger for several halloweens in a row. I didn't even realize that show was still on.

Not that I'm interested in paying $60 for a costume...but I am interested in who sends out these catalogs. I don't get aaaaannnny of them!

I swear it gets earlier and earlier and it only makes me want to put it off more and more -- I'm such a last minute shopper - my Munchkin is lucky not to be a ghost in a plain white sheet I have here at the house.

I'm totally with you on this. I swear that it backfires on me. When the holiday decorations go up so early, I just ignore them and then I freak out when I only have a week left. I blame it on marketing, not on my absent-minded-mommy-ness

The Halloween costume catalogs are my daughter's very things on earth! She pores over them endlessly, wants everything in them, and will not let me throw them away.

Holy! Halloween already? That means all the rest of the big holidays are just around the corner.

And, I still have to go back to school shopping.....

I wish time would slow down

If I got my kids costumes now they'd be raggedy and too small by the time Halloween rolls around!
Love your blog.
