Anissa

This community, sometimes called the Blogosphere, never ceases to amaze me. When a fellow blogger is in need, this Internet Family, joins together at record speed to offer support.

Quite honestly, it blows my mind.

I've only been blogging for less than two years. That's not a long time. I haven't been lucky enough to meet any bloggers in real life. Though I hope to some day. I have however, witnessed the outpouring of love that is forever being extended in so many ways.

Many read, in horror, when Nie Nie and her husband were in a life altering airplane crash during August of 2008. Then hearts were broken with the loss of a little girl named Maddie. And then again when Thalon was taken too soon.

Each time, this Internet Family, sprang into action. No questions asked.

Truly incredible.

Today, I signed onto Facebook. I saw status updates that Anissa of #FreeAnissa had suffered a massive stroke on Tuesday. I couldn't believe it.

Anissa?

The always funny, upbeat Anissa? That strong woman who has already endured rehabilition for a previous stroke. The unbelievable mom who recently posted about her youngest child, Peyton, being one year, cancer free?

Yes. That Anissa.

Again, this Internet Family is doing what it does best. It's taking care of it's own.

Please send prayers, happy thoughts, good vibes, whatever you can to Anissa and her family. And if you can help out in other ways, please visit Aiming Low to find out how.

Madeline Alice Spohr November 11, 2007 - April 7, 2009

I'm sure many of you have already heard the devastating news. The Internets are rocked to their cores. Two days ago, that sweet child Maddie, left this earth. She sprouted her wings and took flight.

I sit here typing; trying to find the right words. I complete a sentence. I pause. I press the backspace key. I start again. I erase again.

There are no words.

Though I do not know Heather or Mike Spohr, my heart goes out to them. I can not imagine the pain they are feeling. My chest is tight; there is a knot of fear, of sadness. Becoming a mom does that. It makes you sense the loss of another mother. It stays with you. It haunts you.

My son, W., saw a picture of Maddie on my laptop last night. He asked who the cute little girl was. I explained what had happened, in terms he could understand. My boy, my sweet, caring, compassionate boy turned to me, his face somber, "Mom, that's so sad."

So sad, indeed.

And then I thought for a moment. I have always donated to the March of Dimes. Ever since W. was born, I wanted to help sponsor this cause. No parent should have to watch their child fight for their life, as we had.

We were blessed. W. survived his congenital heart defect. We should do more, to honor Maddie.

I asked him if he wanted to start our own team to walk for her. For other babies. He jumped at the idea.

The "Jersey Shore Families For Maddie" team is walking on April 26th in Belmar, NJ. Please, if you can, join us. Sign up here and be a part of our team.

Of Maddie's team.

If you can't walk, won't you please sponsor either W. or myself? No parent should endure the Spohr's heartache.

A Big Round Of Applause For Wegmans

I went grocery shopping today. When I was walking into my local Wegman's, I noticed a huge sign outside of the Pharmacy entrance.

FREE Antibiotics with Shopper's Club Card

Seriously?!

Now, Mr. Schmitty has a great prescription plan through work. I can't even begin to tell you how lucky we were to have this when I went through my infertility treatments. It was a Godsend. We also frequently need antibiotics for W. because of his health history. Every time he has a dentist or orthodontist appointment, he needs a dose of Amoxicillin to avoid contracting Bacterial Endocarditis.

I can't imagine the expense to us if we were not covered. I am truly grateful, as I know that so many Americans do not have health insurance, much less prescription medicine coverage. The anxiety those parents must feel when the need to purchase drugs, just to make their child well, interferes with what? Putting food on the table?

When I got home from the store, I immediately went to Wegman's website (stores are located in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) and found the details of their offer so I may share them with my readers, who may not be aware, but can totally benefit from this generous contribution.
"Cough and cold season is tough, but so are these trying times. That’s why from now until March 31, you can get your prescription for oral antibiotics filled with absolutely no cost to you when you use your Shoppers Club card*. “We understand the economic pressures families are facing, including the rising cost of health care, which is something I’m especially concerned about,” says CEO Danny Wegman. “We hope this program will help families better cope with those expenses.” The program covers up to a 14-day supply of nine generic oral antibiotics, with no limits on the number of prescriptions that can be filled."

*Not to be combined with other offers.

How awesome is that?! Wegman's YOU ROCK!

Give A Drop

As Thanksgiving approaches, we all reflect on what we are thankful for. I am thankful for my children, my husband, my family. I am also thankful for all of our health and our home. I have much to be thankful for, as I'm sure you all do.

But, did it ever cross your mind to be thankful for clean drinking water? It never occurred to me, until today.

I received an email from a Virgin Group representative. She asked if I would help spread the word about Project Clean Water at www.giveadrop.com.

Founded in 1997, by singer Jewel, Project Clean Water targets villages around the world that have water problems. The initiative finds solutions to provide these villages with safe drinking water.

Great cause, huh?

Upon visiting the Give A Drop website, you can help by donating a "drop" in support. The more your donation, the bigger your "drop". You can even click on View Drops to see who is helping make the world a better place.

You can also visit the Virgin Money website and "Give Thanks". Virgin will donate $1.00 to Give A Drop for each person who visits and simply posts a picture and caption of someone or something they are thankful for. They are also going to generously donate $50.00 to the organization, just because I told you all about it.

How great is that?!

So please, stop by this Thanksgiving and do something special. Isn't that what this season is all about?

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is a very important month for women. It is the month that Breast Cancer is pushed into the forefront. Everyone is talking about the disease that has affected over 2 million women in the United States.

But it's one month. What about the other eleven?

I don't know about you, but I pay attention in October. But life takes over and by the end of November I'm worrying about what size turkey to stuff and how many shopping days are left until Christmas.

I am ashamed to admit this. I haven't been to my gynecologist in over two years. Circumstances lead me to cancel past appointments. I am 41 years old and have not had my first mammogram yet.

I know.

I have been spared, thus far, of having this beast hit close to home. My family and I have dodged the bullet. That's not to say I will continue to be so lucky. It's sometimes a crap shoot.

Here I am, thinking of the pledge I made LAST October. I vowed to get in to see that doctor and to schedule my mammogram. I guess I'm not very good at keeping promises to myself. I am going to try again. On Monday, I.WILL.MAKE.THAT.APPOINTMENT! This time I am promising all of the brave survivors out there. I might not take myself seriously, but for you, I will do the responsible thing.

Would you like to help out Stage IV Breast Cancer Patients? Then I ask you to take a virtual walk with me and my dear friend and fellow Jersey Girl, Liz of This Full House. Visit the Gal to Gal Walk and create a walker for yourself by donating $5.00 to their cause. Search for Team "This Full House" to walk with Liz and I. Let me know in comments if you have joined us so I can add you to my walk page.

Now, go lie down and prod those ta-tas!

Kate's Foundation

Last night I was on my Facebook account and saw that I had a friend request. I just love friend requests!

I have never received a request from anyone I do not already know or at least recognize. Most are from the mommy blogosphere. This request, however, was different. First of all, the account was not opened with a person's real name but a sort of pseudonym. Rare Meat wanted to be my friend. Hmmmm....interesting.

I normally would have just denied the request, but I was curious. Something told me to check this one out. Maybe a little whisper in my ear? On Facebook you must accept the request to view the person's profile. I could always remove the "friend" later, if need be.

I clicked on the accept button and proceeded to Rare Meat's profile page. I clicked on View Photos of Rare. There was only one picture. The face was vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite place the woman looking back at me. She seemed to be about my age. Yes, I know her, but from where or when?

I went back to her profile page and started scanning for other clues. I saw a website address. www.katesfoundation.com. It hit me.

Quite a few years ago I had heard, through high school friends, that a girl I had grown up with, had passed away from skin cancer. Rare Meat, I realized, was a woman named Amy, the sister of my classmate. She had graduated high school with MY sister. I went back to the picture. It had been over two decades, but it was clear to me now, this was indeed Amy.

I thought back to my school years. Kate, or Katie as I remember her, and I were not friends. That's not to say we were enemies, we just traveled in different circles. We did know each other, somewhat, as we did attend all 12 years of school together. We also attended religion classes in the same parish, in the same small town. I even believe we were cheerleaders together for Pee-Wee Football during 6th grade.

I remember hearing of her passing and thinking how sad her family must be. I thought, "What a horrible ordeal Katie must have gone through."

I clicked on Kate's Foundation link on Amy's Facebook profile. There I read the heartbreaking story of Katie's diagnosis and illness as retold by her father. I also came to know of how strong and giving she was.

Kate began her Foundation before she lost the battle to Melanoma in October of 2000. Amy and her family have carried on her memory by continuing to educate people on the dangers of this horrible disease.

I worry about skin cancer, as I am fair skinned with a lot of moles. I have not always taken care of myself in the sun. I recall many bad burns during my teen years. I never wore sunblock. For God's sake, I used baby oil and a foil covered record album to tan my face!

Thankfully I have taken better care of my children than I did myself. My son, W., has Vitiligo and he also has some pretty large moles, though only 10. I make sure to use sunblock on him and his siblings whenever they are in the sun. W. and I have also been seeing a dermatologist, annually, since he was 6 years old. She is keeping close eye on the large moles he has and has informed me that she made need to take them off in the next few years due to their size.

Now that summer is upon us, please remember to do all you can for you and your children to protect yourselves. Stop by Kate's Foundation and read up on Melanoma Facts, Prevention, and how to perform a Self-Screen (download and print a bookmark to use as a handy reference tool).

Amy, thank you for contacting me. You have opened my eyes and you have touched my heart. Good luck in your fight....in remembrance of Katie.

Support Our Troops

A very good friend emailed me this video from YouTube.com yesterday. I believe it was made by a 15 year old girl. It touched my heart and brought me to tears.

May is National Military Appreciation Month. I thought this video might help us all remember the men and women who are away from their families while they are serving our country.

I also thought I would add a link, for any of you who may be interested. The USO runs a program that for a donation of $25 you can sponsor a care package for the troops. An Operation USO Care Package at a minimum, includes requested items such as pre-paid worldwide phone cards, sunscreen, travel size toiletries, disposable camera and a message from the donor thanking them for their service and sacrifice.

P.S. Please do not make this a political forum. I did not post this video to begin a debate about war. I simply want to remember and support our troops. Thank you.

In Search Of Sponsors

Hi everyone. My son W. is participating in his school's annual Walk-A-Thon. Every year the students spend approximately 45 minutes of their school day walking in order to raise money to help others. The event is a fundraiser for one or more people in our local or school community. By walking W. will show civic responsibility, school pride and spirit, increased self-esteem through helping others in need, and an appreciation for what he has. W. has enthusiastically joined his classmates since Kindergarten to make sure he does the best he can to help the child or family that is being sponsored each year.

A boy from our town, Jake, aged 11, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2002 while in Kindergarten. Jake's leukemia was in remission until January of this year when he relapsed. He will be undergoing treatment for the next year and will go on maintenance for another year after that. It is our hope that by raising money for Jake and his younger brother, Colton, aged 7, they will be able to forget their troubles even for one day and have a great time spending important quality time together as a family.

My son W. would like to ask you all if you would help by donating to this worthy cause. You may pledge any amount as every little bit helps. Please click on the Donation Button on the bottom to contribute via Paypal. The donations will run through my business account. Please make sure to include your name so W. can include it on his pledge form. The Walk-A-Thon is Monday, May 21, 2007, so the deadline for donations will be Sunday, May 20, 2007.

W. and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. And rest assured, he will be walking his little legs off to help his fellow classmates!

Please email me at aschmittylife@aol.com if you would like further information. Thanks again!
